A custom pet portrait from photo should not feel like sending a meaningful image into a black box. The process is easier to judge when you know what happens at each stage: you choose a useful photo, Palette Tales creates the artwork, you review a preview, and production begins only after that review stage.
This guide explains the verified Palette Tales workflow, including timing, edits and the difference between artwork style and the optional Texture Art finish.
Start with a photo that makes your pet easy to recognize
The most useful source photo is not always the most polished one. What matters is whether your pet’s face, eyes, markings and expression are clear enough to guide the artwork.
Before ordering, look for:
- a face that is in focus;
- enough light to see fur color and markings;
- an angle that feels like your pet;
- minimal obstruction around the eyes and muzzle; and
- the expression you would be happy to see every day.
If you are comparing several images, use the pet photo selection checklist before making the final choice. A photo can be casual and still work well when the important details are visible.
What happens after you upload the photo
The uploaded photo becomes the reference for a custom artwork—not an automatic print of the original image.
The process follows a clear sequence:
1. Your pet photo and order details are reviewed. 2. The artwork is created in the selected visual direction. 3. You receive an artwork preview to review. 4. You request edits if anything needs to change. 5. The approved artwork moves into production.
This separation between artwork creation and production is important. It gives you a chance to judge the portrait before it is printed.
When that review-first process matches what you want, compare the current options in the Custom Pet Portrait Collection.
Review the artwork before production
Palette Tales provides a Free Preview Before Printing. The verified preview-delivery timing is 1–2 business days, and business days are Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
Look at the preview as a portrait, not as a tiny thumbnail. Check whether the expression feels right, the markings are recognizable, and the colors suit the mood you wanted. If something feels off, you can request unlimited edits during the review stage.
*Customer Preview Artwork demonstrates an artistic direction; it is not a photograph of the finished physical product.*
You can also browse the Customer Preview Gallery to understand how different pets and expressions can translate into artwork. The gallery is a trust and inspiration resource; the exact result still depends on the photo and chosen direction for your order.
Choose the artwork direction and finish separately
Style and finish answer different questions.
The artwork direction shapes the visual character—such as whether the portrait feels clean, colorful, painterly or graphic. The finish determines how that approved artwork is produced.
Palette Tales offers Standard Print and an optional Texture Art upgrade. Texture Art is not a separate product category or the main subject of the portrait. It is a premium finish option that adds a raised, handcrafted look to the approved artwork.

Understand the production timeline
The current verified timing is:
- artwork preview: 1–2 business days;
- Standard production: 5–7 business days;
- Texture Art: an additional four business days; and
- packing: 1–2 business days.
These are separate stages. They should not be compressed into an unsupported delivery promise, because shipping time is different from preview, production and packing time.
A useful before-order checklist
Before you place the order, confirm that:
- the pet photo shows the expression you want to keep;
- important facial details are visible;
- you understand that the preview is artwork, not the physical product;
- you know whether you prefer Standard Print or the optional Texture Art upgrade; and
- you have time to review the preview and request edits.
When those decisions are clear, choose the portrait format that fits your space and purpose.
